Nguyen Nguyen, Ph.D., L.P.

Dr. Nguyen is a bilingual Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas, offering therapy in both English and Vietnamese. Alongside his full-time role as a professor, he maintains a small private practice, where he works with clients throughout Texas via telehealth. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech University and completed his predoctoral clinical internship at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Nguyen did not begin his training journey expecting psychotherapy to become such a central part of his professional identity. He initially entered the field with a fierce passion for research, teaching, and understanding the larger systems that shape people’s lives. His love for psychotherapy, however, deepened through his training in the psychodynamic tradition: a perspective that taught him to see each client as both a holistic and historical being. Holistic, in the sense that each person is complex: carrying both pain and power, flaws and strengths, wounds and possibilities. Historical, in the sense that who we are today has been shaped through our earlier relationships, experiences, losses, and the patterns we learned in order to survive.

From this perspective, Dr. Nguyen does not approach clients as a collection of symptoms to be fixed. He meets them as whole and relational human beings. At the heart of his work is a fierce belief that many of our deepest wounds were created within relationships. And, healing can also become possible within relationships. Therapy offers a relational space where clients can begin to experience a different way of being with another person: honesty without cruelty, closeness without losing themselves, and clarity without shame. This belief forms the ethos of Dr. Nguyen’s work as a psychologist.

Dr. Nguyen has trained in a wide range of clinical settings, including university counseling centers, community mental health centers, integrated healthcare settings, and hospitals. These experiences have given him both the sensitivity and the practical tools to work with clients across diverse identities, backgrounds, and clinical concerns. He has received specialized training in complex trauma, chronic pain, grief and loss, LGBTQIA+ concerns, and relationship and attachment difficulties.  In his work, he strives to balance depth with practicality: honoring the deeper therapeutic process while also attending to the immediate concerns and goals that bring clients into therapy.

His therapeutic style reflects both his personality and his professional values: warm, relational, humorous, and direct. He is not a therapist who will sweet-talk clients out of their reality or ask them to “positive-think” their way out of suffering. He believes that people deserve more than easy reassurance. They deserve a space where their pain can be taken seriously, where difficult truths can be spoken with care, and where they can begin to see themselves more clearly and compassionately.

Dr. Nguyen believes that clarity, when held with compassion, can be one of the most transformative things we offer ourselves and one another. And such transformative combination of clarity and compassion are not imposed from a distance. Rather, it is cultivated within a caring, authentic, and deeply human relationship between therapist and client.
